Kylian Mbappe has become the latest star to throw PSG into turmoil after refusing to make any promises about his future at the French club. The French champions have already been left stunned by Neymar’s wish to leave the club – just two years after making the move to Parc des Princes. The stance taken by the Brazilian has made Mbappe a priority number one for the French club, but the 20-year-old has now added fuel to the speculation surrounding Real Madrid’s interest.

PSG have tried to quell any speculation surrounding Mbappe by claiming that the player will 200% stay at the club, but the same kind of commitment has not been displayed by the young star. According to Goal, he said:

“I never make promises for two reasons. Firstly because I am not the person who is responsible for everything that happens at this club and secondly, I don’t want to throw promises up into the air without being sure that they can be kept.

“I’m only interested in reality, and what we know for sure today.”

The Spanish club have been trying to sign either one of the PSG stars this summer. President Florentino Perez has been actively adding to the squad in order to please Zinedine Zidane, who has returned to the club for a second spell. The lure of playing for the Frenchman has already been very hard to resist for Eden Hazard, who has deep French connections. Hence, it was not a surprise when Madrid were linked with a move for Mbappe, who could be the French superstar for the next decade.

The lure to think about a move to Real Madrid may have come about due to several reasons, but the Champions League honour might be a crucial factor. For all the money that has been spent on PSG since the rich Middle East investors took over, the French club have not been able to make any inroads into the European competition. PSG have even failed to make a semi-final appearance even after multiple attempts to do so. Madrid, on the other hand, have been building on their record number of titles.

Mbappe made the permanent switch to Paris St Germain in the summer of 2018 for a whopping €180 million. This remains a world record transfer fee for a teenager, but there is every opportunity that Mbappe would become the most expensive player – eclipsing Neymar to the accolade – if he manages to secure a move to a new club in the next couple of years. Neymar is the most expensive player at this moment with his move to Parc des Princes costing an astronomical €222 million two years ago, but the Brazilian may no longer hold the status as the most valuable player considering his age.

Mbappe came up with his best season to date in the 2018-19 campaign. He came up with 39 goals in just 43 matches across all competitions – including four goals in eight Champions League games. Yet, these numbers failed to produce success on the European front. Mbappe is already on course to becoming one of the most successful players in history, as he has lifted seven major honours at club and international level. The 20-year-old helped France win the World Cup in 2018 while also grabbing the Best Young Player title at the tournament. Clearly, a player of such stature wants to be winning more than just French Ligue 1 titles.
