Real Madrid have emerged as the latest candidate to fight for the signature of Neymar, according to Sky Sports. The Brazil forward was understood to be very keen on a return to Barcelona, but the Catalan outfit have so far been unable to come up with the large transfer fee that would cost to sign him from PSG.
It is rumoured that Real Madrid have offered €120 million along with Luka Modric, who is a former Ballon d’Or award winner. If PSG show interest, Gareth Bale can also be included in the deal considering that the Welshman is clearly not part of the plans at the club. Neymar is thought to have reservations about making the switch to the Santiago Bernabeu, but the 27-year-old may have limited his options with his actions in the summer.
Les Parisiens paid a whopping €222 million – a world record fee – in order to secure his signature back in 2017. However, he has recently revealed his desire to leave the club before the start of the new season.
Neymar has not featured in the pre-season friendly games and it is widely expected that he will seal his exit before transfer deadline day, which runs until September 2.
PSG are believed to have offered the forward to both Manchester United and Juventus, but both have declined the opportunity to sign a player who has not offered his best on and off the field.
Barcelona recently unveiled the signing of Junior Firpo and club president Josep Maria Bartomeu did not rule out more arrivals at the Camp Nou. However, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that Barcelona can raise the substantial transfer funds required to convince PSG. The signing of Antoine Griezmann is a significant factor behind Barcelona’s struggles to raise the €180 million demanded by PSG.
Madrid are looking to take advantage of the vacuum by moving to sign the 27-year-old. Zinedine Zidane has already been backed quite heavily in the market with the signings of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, and Eder Militao. However, pre-season performances have been poor and Madrid are certainly not in great shape ahead of the new campaign.
There are very few players who have gone on to represent Real Madrid and Barcelona. The likes of Ronaldo and Luis Figo feature prominently in the list, and Neymar could become the next Brazilian to play for the two teams. During his time at Barcelona, Neymar ended up picking up two league titles and one Champions League honour. However, he was largely in the shadows of Lionel Messi, whose powers are certainly on the wane considering his age.
Madrid finished a whopping 19 points behind Barcelona last season and they watched the Catalan club lift the league title once again. Even though Zidane was immensely successful in guiding the club to three successive Champions League titles, there has been little success on the domestic front. Neymar has not had the best of times since making the switch to Parc des Princes. He was overshadowed to a great extent by Kylian Mbappe last season.
Will Neymar be convinced to wear the famous white jersey?
