Even amidst the transfer saga surrounding neighbour, PSG are edging closer towards signing Abdou Diallo from Borussia Dortmund. The French under-21 international has been on PSG’s radar for quite a while. He will sign for the French team in a deal worth around €32 million, according to Goal.

The defender becomes one of the key signings for PSG in the summer. Pablo Sarabia and Ander Herrera have been the other major acquisitions for the club so far in the summer. However, the net spend on both these players is small by PSG’s recent standards. Herrera has been signed on a free transfer from Manchester United while Sarabia cost just €18 million from Sevilla, as PSG took advantage of a relatively low release clause for a player who has done well in Spanish football of late.

Regarding the interest from PSG, Diallo said last week: “A young player in Europe who tells you that PSG’s project is not interesting is not credible, it’s a nice project.”

Abdou Diallo comes in to strengthen PSG’s defence and compete alongside the likes of Marquinhos and Thiago Silva. Both these players have been the mainstay in PSG’s defence but added competition may bring out more from these two players. Last season, PSG had conceded the second-highest tally of goals among the teams that qualified to the last 16 of the Champions League. Ultimately, such a poor defence was a key factor behind the club’s exit at the hands of a poor Manchester United team.

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel has thus been able to raid his former club in order to get one of the highly-rated defenders in European football. The 23-year-old was a regular for Dortmund last season and he featured in 38 games across all competitions. The 2018-19 season saw Dortmund make a comeback and the club came second in the Bundesliga after being in the title hunt for much of the campaign. The return of Mats Hummels to Signal Iduna Park has threatened Diallo’s status as a regular centre back, as Hummels commands a legendary status at Dortmund despite his move to Bayern Munich.

Diallo is no stranger to French football after having represented AS Monaco for two campaigns before moving onto Mainz 05 in 2017. The 23-year-old was even part of the Monaco title winning squad in the 2016-17 campaign. An impressive campaign at the Opel Arena led to a €28 million switch to Dortmund in the summer of 2018.

PSG are under immense pressure to make a major impact on the European stage. The club have never been able to get past the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite repeated attempts and huge sums of money being thrown at the squad.

In recent years, the French club have had to cut back on their budget after being subjected to pressure from the UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations. It was only last summer that the club made Kylian Mbappe as the most expensive teenager by signing him for €180 million. Now, PSG may be on the verge of selling Neymar for around a similar figure as the Brazilian no longer appears to be interested in representing the team.

Apart from dominating the centre-back positions with his presence, Diallo can also play at left back.
