Paris St Germain sporting director Leonardo has claimed that Neymar has made multiple mistakes in his efforts to leave the French club. The rumours about Neymar’s potential unhappiness at the Parc des Princes surfaced towards the end of last season and the Brazilian forward did not report to pre-season on time.

Over the course of the next few weeks, Barcelona are actively trying to bring the 27-year-old back to the Camp Nou. Yet, the transfer talks between Barcelona and PSG have hit an impasse in recent times and Neymar is in danger of spending at least the next six months away from any first-team action.

Leonardo claims that the striker has made several mistakes in his efforts to try and force a move back to Barcelona. All parties concerned are working to achieve a swift resolution before the end of the European transfer window on September 2.

Neymar was left out of the match day squad for the opening weekend of the French Ligue 1. PSG picked up a victory over Nimes, but the victory was overshadowed by a large number of supporters actively showing their hatred towards the striker. Leonardo watched Neymar fall from grace with his popularity levels in France at an all-time low. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

“Neymar has made mistakes. I didn’t know him before. Over time, I have got to know him. I honestly think he is a good boy with a very good heart. On the pitch, he is an extraordinary player.”

The striker suffered an injury during pre-season and this has further complicated his return to the squad. The entry of Real Madrid certainly changed the picture with regards to Neymar’s future destination, as the capital outfit had the financials required to sign the 27-year-old unlike Barcelona who had exhausted most of the funds on the likes of Antoine Griezmann.

PSG are understood to be demanding just under €200 million for the player. It would represent a small loss on the €222 million investment made just two years ago. There is no urgency from PSG to sell the player who still has three years left on the contract. It is a major factor behind Leonardo openly admitting that Neymar might have made a mistake at the wrong time in his career.

If a move does not come through, Neymar faces the difficult prospect of having to win back the manager, teammates, and fans. This is an extremely difficult task considering that Kylian Mbappe is already on his way to establishing himself as the best player in the PSG squad. The Copa America offered more disappointment at international level for Neymar and he would not appreciate being out of the first-team action at least for the next six months.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have not made massive offers in order to sign Neymar. The former appear to have made a €90 million offer that will also include James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale – two players who are already deemed surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu. Meanwhile, Barcelona have made Philippe Coutinho available as part of a similar sized offer.

Leonardo still remains unsure if the 27-year-old striker will stay or leave the Parc des Princes. Either way, Neymar is set for a difficult few weeks in his career.
